Photographer 5: Duane Michal

This photographer is one of the main inspirations for my work, as I find it interesting how he documents his photographs in order to tell a story. I specifically like the mirror reflections playing on the idea of identity and who you are. I think this could relate to my topic and benefit the development of it, as I want to explore the idea of angels being mysterious and unknown. Nobody quite knows who they are or what they do, except from accounts in the Bible and from people with first hand experience of them. Therefore I want my photographs to explore the identity of Angels. As well as this, I think that the mirror images could also show reflections of the idea of 'Heaven on Earth' in regards to angels.

Identity / Who or what are angels?

This image shows that our perceptions of someone could sometimes be distorted. Likewise with our view of the spiritual realm and our beliefs. The reflection could also suggest the idea of how we look to God for advice, or maybe even the idea that heaven is on earth through such things as Angels.
The images are lay out in such a way that it begins to tell a story of the woman being viewed in different ways. The end picture doesn't have a face, which shows that identity has been a journey for her.

Duane Michal uses this set of 8 images to tell a story of the fallen angel. He uses movement to represent the angel and to bring the story to life.

My final images will be inspired by this work of Duane Michal.
I have responded to his mirror reflection work in the page 'Development 4 // Reflections' .
